2013 tour is behind me. Relieved but a little sad it's over for this year.....

Well it's over. 250 miles. An unforgettable four days riding through France. Some of it beautiful, some of it akin to riding along the A3! I didn't expect to be riding in 37 degree heat, UK training certainly cannot prepare you for that. I love the sun but I was crying out for shade. Thank you very much to my lovely husband for the Surrey Hills training which paid off big time and thank you to to my fellow middle age women in Lycra. I will never forget the miles, the camaraderie, the team work, the punctures, picking up a fellow team mate from a ditch, re-discovering my eternity ring on a French village road whilst rescuing my remaining precious rings from slipping off my fingers, the recovery rose, the sweat, the pain, the volterol, my increasing knowledge of bike mechanics, the cries of "car" "clear" "lorry" "bastard hill" "my garmin's happy" "we're off course" "we're back on course" "where the hell is Heric?" "what's our average mph?" and the laughter. Thanks guys, next year is already in the planning. Now for some down time (and that doesn't mean descent!) with my lovely family. Xxx

Lourdesy, Lourdesy, Lourdesy

So after 4 hot committed days on the bike Helen, Kate and rose again on the 5th day at 4.45! Kate very kindly to drive H and I to La Rochelle train stn to get the 6 o'clock to Toulouse . We thought we would be lying by the pool by midday.
Issue no 1- NO train- so on the coach...aargh! 3.40 hrs later arrive Bordeaux - oh no too late for our connecting train...or so we thought. Quelle surprise the train is there along with 1000's of people scrambling around like us. Found our carriage no4 but where to put bike? The train TGV is huge- H asks guard about bike. We do as told and continue to back of train- whistles and bleepers start going we think mmmm should climb aboard ASAP - end up in carriage 15 but no matter we have seats by the luggage and bike is next to us. Doors close we pull out and relief we Made it . Celebrate good fortune coffees all round then little snooze to catch ip on early start- perfecto.
Issue 2.
H notices the display above the carriage entrance:
Dax, Pau, Lourdes...
Curiously enough I had noticed a disproportionate number of children with learning difficulties and adults with physical disability and was a but worried about position if bike- obvi' not wanting to cause more injury!!
Suggest to H that if French anything like uk maybe they forgot to change info' (forever the optimist)
H goes off to find out and returns with bad news. Yes we are on our way to Lourdes! Only the first 4 carriages going to Toulouse.
H has minor altercation with the ticket man- puts him right in no uncertain terms- way to go Helen....after he'd picked himself up off the floor he was in much more agreeable mood and staggered away down the train.
H has lovely sister and brother in law who are already at the house and really don't mind doing a 6 hr round trip to rescue us from Dax! Where is Dax anyway? Answer miles away from anywhere. We can only comment on the station cafe which seemed full if people like ourselves 'lost in France' ( but not as Bonnie sang ' in love' with very much at the moment )
Just for the record facilities at Gare de Dax are not worth a stop.
So Glenn (the bro' in law) arrives in super duper car- luxury and by 6pm we are in the pool, Glenn is making perfect G&T's, Alison is making supper and as the great bard says 'all's well that ends well.'
Thank you and goodnight from Villebrumier.

- to kate and Colinn for all route preparation and the 'recky' beyond call of duty.

Looking fwd to next year whilst Helen and I are stranded in Dax when we should be on a train to Toulouse!!
Little PS to follow in due course...
Helen at Gare de Dax!?

Last Day

We made it!!
All so happy to see the bridge.
Leaving La Roche sur Yon via a long search for a bike shop to replace inner tubes used the previous day we ended up in the Super Intermarche where you can get anything including bike chains, lots of little bits and hooray hooray the right sized inner tubes. Now fully tubed up we could leave but not without a quick vision of possible things to come - not sure if this is if we carry on cycling or if we don't?

SUNDAY

Evans has run out of energy bars

The 12 litre packing case is looking very small

The packing list is getting longer and the space is getting shorter

The Hoo Ha Tube is too big for the case

Can't wait for the confines of the snug, cool cabin at outside temperature of 30C

Nightwear or no nightwear that is the question - "what if there's a fire?"

Jelly babies are packed along with gels, blocks, nuuns and electrolyte tabs

Anxiety is the order of the day, Marian can't wait for the terrifying descents as Judith relishes in the 1:3 climb.

It's not a competition but the yellow is up for grabs - Kate!

Helen and Frances battle it out for Queen of the Hills

Gill - the sprint prize for the vino collapso awaits.

So in 24 hours we shall be in the bar on the boat drinking electrolytes and chowing down pasta……France are you ready for us?
